Special Events

Athens County EMS provides on-site medical coverage for selected events in our response area. This can include a non-dedicated or dedicated ambulance with paramedic staffing, plus extra EMTs and Paramedics, supervisory oversight, and medical tents with patient triage and minor first aid station capabilities.

We are honored to cover large and small events like Ohio University Football and Men’s Basketball games, the Nelsonville Music Festival, the Athens Halloween Block Party, the spring street fests in Athens, the Glouster Old Settlers Reunion, the Athens County Fair, the Albany Independent Fair, and high school home football games.

Events are classified in one of three categories, depending on the size of the event and the anticipated impact and need for emergency medical care and transportation.

Court Street 21 - Copy

NOTE:  New rate structure effective January 17, 2023

Class One – Non Dedicated EMS Coverage

One ambulance and two crew members providing advanced life support services. The crew will attend the event but must be available to respond to EMS calls in the community and may need to leave. This is normally restricted to small community events with a limited need for EMS.  There is no charge for this service but advance scheduling is required.

Class Two – Small Event Dedicated Coverage

One ambulance and two crew members providing advanced life support services. The crew is dedicated to the event and will not leave. If ambulance transportation is necessary, Athens County EMS will dispatch a squad from the nearest EMS station. The special event EMS crew will stabilize the patient and prepare them for transportation. The fee is $120/hour for one advanced life support ambulance and two crew members.

Class Three – Large Event Dedicated Coverage

  • This category is for any special event requiring more than one ambulance and a dedicated EMS crew. We require a face-to-face meeting with the event organizers and a tour of the venue where the event will occur to determine the specific EMS response needs prior to striking an agreement. Almost all Class Three special events require multiple crews and ambulances staged at the venue along with an on-site supervisor to coordinate medical care and transportation. Athens County EMS can also provide an enclosed triage and treatment station, non-hazmat decontamination showers, a first aid station for walk-up visits, a mobile command post, and other equipment to facilitate medical coverage and response.
  • Fee structure:
    • $120/hour per dedicated advanced life support ambulance and two crew members
    • $35/hour per extra EMT or Paramedic to augment ambulance staffing
    • $45/hour for a Supervisor
    • $150/day for first aid tent and disposable medical supplies (includes dedicated staffing)
  • Final staffing arrangements are customized for each event and must be approved by the EMS Chief

Athens County EMS requires a 30 calendar day advance notice for all special event coverage. All services must be prepaid at least 10 days prior to the event. In the event your event is cancelled, we will issue a refund.

We DO NOT provide EMS coverage for motocross events, motorcycle races, or auto races.
