Athens County Emergency Medical Services is now accepting applications --

We are building a list of Paramedics and EMTs who are interested in full-time and part-time careers with our agency.

  • Athens County EMS is a government entity created and overseen by the Athens County Board of Commissioners. Our EMS Chief is hired by the Commissioners to manage the day-to-day operations of the department and serve as the Executive Director. An Assistant Chief of Operations, a Deputy Chief of Training and Compliance, and station-level Captains and Lieutenants have specific responsibilities to assist the Chief in managing our personnel, our physical facilities, our fleet of ambulances, and our medical equipment to provide around-the-clock emergency services.
  • Our department operates from five stations (Athens, Coolville, Glouster, Nelsonville, and Albany) and we normally staff six or seven ALS ambulances 24 hours a day. We have approximately 70 Paramedics and EMTs on staff with 44 being full time employees. ACEMS handles approximately 10,600 requests for service annually.
  • We are 9-1-1 response only.  No out-of-town transfers and no point-to-point medical transportation calls.
  • Full time field employees normally work a 24 hour on, 48 hour off unit day rotation. We do not utilize Kelly days or drop days at this time.
  • As county government employees, we contribute to the OPERS state retirement system and enjoy a robust health, dental, vision, and life insurance package. We are also able to participate in the Ohio 457 deferred compensation program and a variety of private benefits programs, such as Aflac and Allstate.
  • All employees enjoy paid training time and a generous annual uniform allowance.
  • Paid personal days, sick time, vacation time, and premium holiday pay are awarded.
  • A number of employer-paid online training options are available, such as CORSA Online, 24/7 EMS, and online EMT and Paramedic refresher classes.  Athens County EMS also offers a growing list of in-house training programs for our staff and we offer paid teaching opportunities for properly credentialed employees.  We are a certified Ohio EMS continuing education and Emergency Medical Responder training site.  All EMS classes are approved by the Ohio Division of EMS for continuing education credit.
  • Full time (non-management) employees are represented by the International Association of Firefighters Local 5126.
  • Overtime pay for staffing stations, special events, and extra duty assignments are available.  Athens County EMS covers a variety of special events, like (NCAA Division I) Ohio University Football and Men’s Basketball home games, the Athens Halloween Block Party, the Nelsonville Music Festival, the Paw Paw Festival, the Athens County Fair, the Albany Independent Fair, the Glouster Old Settler’s Reunion, a number of student-led street fests in Athens, and all of the home football games at five local high schools.
